This month we're talking to Maycocks of Holloway. A family run business with skills rarely seen today.
We've done a lot of research into the producers we work with, and spoken to incredibly talented people across the Peak District. Everything from the Maycock family is not only exceptional in quality, taste and value, it's provenance is rarely seen these days. Theirs is a unique story, and we're very happy to share it with you.
We chatted to brother and sister, Jonathan and Emily, to see what makes their business so good, and what makes them tick too.
"We are a passionate and hardworking team made up of three full time Butchers, one apprentice butcher, three full time bakers, two part time bakers and Mick, our wonderful delivery driver!" It's clear that they're a tight knit and close team. They have a strong and loyal local customer base, and it's very easy to see why.
"Both Jonathan and I have been brought up on wonderful homemade food, and we’ve both worked alongside our parents who have instilled a passion and creativity for producing outstanding food and service. We believe It’s vital in today’s busy world to eat as well as you can everyday, and to teach the importance of this to people, most importantly to our own children. Where we source our ingredients is high on our list of priorities, as fresh and local as possible.”
Anyone who lives and works here in the Peak District has a personal view on what makes this place so special. Jonathan and Emily know what it means to them. "The landscape is stunning... the rolling hills, the country lanes, the fields full of livestock, the quaint villages and towns. What’s not to love? Oh and not forgetting the Derbyshire ‘folk’... friendly chatty and often difficult to understand the accent!!”.
Ask any one of our producers what their favourite meal is and you can bet the answer is something close to home. "It goes without saying that I love steak and chips" says Emily. "With a good green salad of homegrown leaves from my own garden! Cooked medium rare with a homemade béarnaise ... yum!"
If you ask about a favourite drink, you often don't have to look too far afield. "I’m not a big drinker" says Emily. "And it would depend on the time of year, but on a summers evening there’s nothing better than a G&T! Have you tried the new locally produced gin from White Peak Distillery - Shining Cliff.. amazing!"
We know how hard our producers work, and the exceptionally long hours they invest into what they do. There aren't many days off so the time we have is really important. We asked how they spend their "free time".
"Free time! That’s not something we have a lot of, running a busy family shop, but when it does happen... Jonathan's other passion is farming and the great outdoors. He supports his two daughters with their riding and has just joined the local pub darts team. Another great passion is winter sports! Emily is a boarder and Jonathan is a skier! Emily loves to keep fit. "Running and fitness classes are my thing. I have a six year old whose involved with various activities so just running him around all week long is a full time job! Socialising with friends and helping on several committees keeps our lives full and interesting"
We're very proud to work with Maycocks. We're learning from them all the time and they are incredibly generous with their time and knowledge. Soon we'll be organising opportunities for groups to learn some of their skills too.
We’ll keep you posted. Sign up to our mailing list for future updates.
